As the 2026 NFL Draft approaches, a spotlight shines on several standout players from Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). From sprinters to marathoners, the world’s top athletes have delivered dazzling performances this season. Both have skills that are turning NFL scouts’ heads. More specifically, linebacker Hunter, defensive tackle Williams and offensive lineman Onwuazor have really stood out as strong candidates. Evaluators are jubilant over this year’s draft class, expecting more game changers to come from HBCU programs than in previous years. They feel that these players can be difference-makers professionally.
Hunter’s 75 stops ranked him first in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) in 2023 while playing through conference slate. After an injury-riddled past season where he only played in two games, his performance has certainly brought excitement back into the fold. Scouts are confident that Hunter can get back on track to play like he’s capable and earn this draft class’ surprise selection. There’s a consensus that he’d really excel as a NFL weakside linebacker. His athleticism and playmaking ability combined would make him an ideal fit for the position.
Williams is likely to move to a 3-technique role next season. He finished last year with impressive numbers 50 tackles, 11 tackles for loss and 7 sacks. Williams is a game-wrecking presence at the point of attack on the Bears’ first level of defense. His powerful game on the field has made notable noise.
Hunter’s Comeback Potential
Hunter’s journey has certainly seen its ups and downs. Injuries limited him last season and led to a drastic drop in playing time. What has struck me most has been his resilience this year. He led the MEAC with a gaudy 75 tackles in 8 conference games.
Scouts drool over Hunter’s potential to make plays on every level of the field. An AFC area scout commented on his potential, stating, “I don’t think he’s quite as polished with his hands as [Carson] Vinson from last year, but he’s a better overall athlete.”
This year’s draft will really be Hunter’s shot to shine, and it’ll be his chance to continue his recent run of success. If he’s able to recapture what made him such an explosive player during the 2023 season, he’ll be able to raise his draft stock immensely.
Along with Hunter’s impressive statistics, he’s garnered attention from evaluators due to his agility and coverage skills. A Northeast area scout noted, “His range and ability to cover ground really stand out.” These comments only serve to emphasize the innovative aspects of his play. He’s preparing himself for the next step and it shows all of his high potential.
Williams’ Dominance on Defense
Whether it’s as his team’s defensive captain or the team leader in tackles, Williams has long established himself as a player worth lining up with. We expect his move to a true 3-technique role to only increase his influence on the game. Last season, he was nothing short of spectacular, recording 50 tackles, 11.5 tackles for loss and 7 sacks. He’s really turned into an invaluable member of the squad.
Williams’ disruptive nature at the first level of the Bears’ defense has not gone unnoticed. It makes him a possible game-changing addition to whichever defensive scheme he steps into at the next level. Scouts love his nose for the ball to stop plays before they start, turning him into one of the most coveted prospects on the market.
As teams get a sense of what they need going into the draft Williams is going to be on a lot of teams single-bar facemask short list. His combination of size, speed, and football IQ makes him an appealing choice for teams looking to bolster their defensive front.
Givens and Reed: Emerging Stars
One of his most impressive performances was just last week when he led the Aggies to a 52-35 victory over Prairie View A&M. He racked up a highly impressive 5.5 tackles for loss and two sacks, illustrating his ability to permeate opposing offensive lines. Givens has the upfield burst and speed to get momentum and get by blockers, which means he could be a game-changing defensive force.
At the same time, Reed became a leader on one of the FCS’ head-turning defenses back in 2024. With a breakout performance during the just completed season, Lewan has scouts excited about his future potential. As he matures, Reed has the potential to shoot up draft boards as the season wears on.
Onwuazor was named CIAA Offensive Lineman of the Year in 2024. His impressive showings have made him a contender for the fifth round in next April’s draft. Onwuazor’s prowess in pass protection and opening up running lanes is sure to have NFL franchises eager to get him at the next level.
Fortilien fronts a Jackson State squad that will attempt to reclaim the HBCU national title this year. His leadership both on and off the field will be key as they look to find success in the postseason once again.
