South African amateur Kieron Van Wyk, a senior at the College of Charleston, made an impressive debut in his first PGA Tour start at the Puerto Rico Open. The 23-year-old showcased his exceptional skills on Saturday with a bogey-free round of 7-under 65 at the Grand Reserve Golf Club. This performance placed him just one stroke behind the leader, Karl Vilips, setting the stage for an exciting final round.
Van Wyk's remarkable round included an eagle on the par-5 14th hole, demonstrating his potential to become the second amateur winner in two years on the PGA Tour. He earned his spot in this event by winning the 2024 White Sands Bahamas Men's NCAA Golf Invitational. Expressing his excitement, Van Wyk said:
"Definitely soaking in every moment and the crowds and having the people cheer me on. We don't get that every week playing in college."
Australian Karl Vilips secured the top position on the leaderboard with an 18-under 198 after shooting a 66. Having earned a PGA Tour card last season on the Korn Ferry Tour, Vilips is in a strong position to claim victory. American Joseph Bramlett shares second place with Van Wyk after delivering an impressive 64.
Other notable players include Austin Cook, who stands at 16 under after a round of 69, while Chad Ramey, Steven Fisk, Norman Xiong, and William Mouw are all tied at 15 under. Meanwhile, second-round leader Rasmus Neergard-Petersen experienced a setback with a score of 73, dropping into a tie for ninth at 14 under.
Despite the pressure, Van Wyk remains focused and optimistic about his chances. He confidently stated:
"Just keep on doing what I've been doing the last three days and hopefully it pays off by the end of tomorrow."
Ranked number one in the APGA Collegiate Ranking, Van Wyk has proven himself to be a formidable contender. He acknowledged his current standing, saying:
"Feeling pretty good with the position I'm in."
As the Puerto Rico Open nears its conclusion, all eyes will be on Van Wyk as he attempts to make history with a victory on Sunday.
