Rising Star: Huijsen’s Journey to Becoming Bournemouth’s Defensive Prodigy

Bournemouth’s 19-year-old centre-back, Dean Huijsen, is making waves in the football community with his impressive performances. Since joining Bournemouth from Roma in July, Huijsen has started 17 consecutive games across all competitions. His defensive prowess and ability to read the game have earned him comparisons to legendary centre-backs like Sergio Ramos, whom he idolized growing up. With two goals already under his belt for Bournemouth, he has quickly established himself as a key player for the team.

Huijsen's journey to this point is rooted in hard work and determination, qualities that have been evident from a young age. Juanito, who observed Huijsen's development at Malaga, noted his ambition and desire to succeed as a footballer.

"His physical and technical attributes were obvious at Malaga but what stood out most about him most to me was the determination and ambition he had about being a footballer," said Juanito.

Bournemouth secured Huijsen with a six-year contract, highlighting their belief in his potential. His performances have not only garnered praise from fans and pundits but also from notable figures like Jose Mourinho, who described him as one of the best young defenders in Europe.

A Rising Star with Defensive Prowess

Huijsen's style of play has drawn comparisons to some of the game's greats, not least due to his ability to intercept and neutralize threats on the field. His defensive skills have been a cornerstone of Bournemouth's strategy, allowing them to maintain a solid backline.

His tactical understanding and maturity on the field have enabled him to impose himself against older and more experienced players, showcasing a level of composure that belies his age. This maturity is complemented by an impressive work ethic and determination to improve continuously.

Juanito highlighted Huijsen's relentless drive to excel, emphasizing the efforts made by Huijsen and his family in honing his skills.

"It is not just that he wants it, it is that he has done absolutely everything he can to achieve it. He trains better than anyone, he prepares better than anyone, he corrects his mistakes better than anyone," added Juanito.

Huijsen's father played a significant role in his development, ensuring that every aspect of his training was meticulously analyzed.

"His father spared no expense to help his son become a footballer," Juanito remarked. "He bought a camera to record him and analyse his mistakes. Everything. He worked so hard but his family prepared him well from a young age."

Scoring Sensation from the Back

While primarily known for his defensive capabilities, Huijsen also possesses a potent attacking threat. His knack for scoring goals as a centre-back is reminiscent of Fernando Hierro, another towering figure in football history known for his goal-scoring exploits from defense.

Huijsen's ability to score from set-pieces and outside the box adds a valuable dimension to Bournemouth’s game plan. During his time at Malaga’s U15s, he showcased this talent by scoring 12 goals in just half a season.

"He scored 12 goals in half a season playing for our U15s. As a centre-back," said Robles.

Juanito attributed this goal-scoring ability to Huijsen's innate intention to find the back of the net.

"He has the intention to score and that's what helps him do it," stated Juanito.

Despite facing challenges posed by being marked by top defenders due to his height, Huijsen's determination ensures he remains a consistent threat in front of goal.

"Of course, he is tall as well. But being tall often means you have a harder time because you are marked by the best defenders. Dean just has so much determination that it doesn't matter," Juanito explained.

The Future Awaits

Huijsen's trajectory suggests that he has only scratched the surface of what he can achieve in football. With a high ceiling for growth and development, many expect him to become one of the world’s best centre-backs within the next decade. His versatility on the international stage is another testament to his growing reputation; he has represented both the Netherlands' youth teams and Spain at U21 level.

His family remains an integral support system, attending every Bournemouth game to cheer him on. Their presence underscores the importance of a strong support network in Huijsen's professional journey.

Juanito believes that Huijsen's decision to join Bournemouth was strategic for his career advancement.

"He decided to take a different step and I think it was a good decision," commented Juanito.

Despite his rapid rise, those close to Huijsen caution against forgetting his youthfulness amidst the accolades.

"He now looks like a player who has everything, but remember he is still a child," Juanito reminded.
