Devin Neal, New Orleans Saints Neal is a 22-year-old rookie RB. He’s certainly done his part, as he’s had an all-around major impact in his first season in the NFL. Neal was considered a low sixth-round pick. At the University of Kansas, he put in work to become their all-time leading rusher and went on to become team captain. His time with the Saints has been an arduous one. Due to recent injuries to established players Kendre Miller and Alvin Kamara, he found himself with the opportunity to take on a larger role.
Neal’s time with the Saints got off to an inauspicious start as he found himself buried on the depth chart behind established veterans. He never really got on track early on with a hamstring injury he suffered over the course of the preseason. Because of this, he played less than five offensive snaps in the first half of the 2020 season. As the season wore on, Neal proved to be a steady comeback force and always eager to rise to the occasion when his team needed him the most.
In the last several weeks, Neal has taken on an increased load. He came up big both starts prior and registered heavy minutes in the last three affairs. He’s been increasing his yards from scrimmage throughout this lone stretch. This further demonstrates his quick thinking and ability to think on the fly while under pressure. He enjoyed a breakout game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. During that game, he carried the ball for 70 yards and recorded his first career touchdown. Further boosting his NFL resume, Neal made an impact in the passing game, hauling in a pass for 14 yards.

Both Coach Moore and others have noted Neal’s diligence and professionalism, which have distinguished him from most young players. “I think one of the most impressive aspects of being a young guy is how prepared he is,” Moore stated. He made the point that protection can be a reason that rookie RBs often don’t see as much action early in their careers. Still, Neal’s proficiency at playing all three downs has made him a contestant for more snaps completely.
Neal was very proud of his blocking skills. He understands what good blocking looks like and he knows that it’s absolutely crucial to being an effective running back in the league. His rare commitment to protecting the quarterback motivates both his coaches and teammates. This commitment is increasing his importance to Ohio State’s offense.
“Yeah, it came last second and looked kind of crazy, but whatever you have to do is kind of my mindset,” – Neal
Neal’s connection with fellow rookie Tyler Shough, who plays quarterback for the Saints, has played an essential role in his development. The two have developed a close relationship on and off the field. Now, I just think that we sort of feed into each other, in a strange sort of way. We’ve just got that bond, particularly off the field. I think that transpires on the field too, and so I think that helps, Neal said.
Shough expressed similar sentiments, lauding Neal for his abilities on the field and mental approach. He’s probably one of the best running backs that I’ve ever played with, just from a mindset – mentally, his game-awareness and approach. As Neal approaches the end of his first NFL season, he reflects on the challenges he has faced and the lessons he has learned along the way. He remains focused on improving his game and contributing to the Saints’ success as they navigate the remainder of the season.
