Rising Star Ben McKinney Aims for England Glory

Ben McKinney, another prodigious young talent and a name to conjure with on the domestic English scene, is causing quite a stir. Now he’s preparing to display them in the County Championship. The highly rated 19-year-old cricketer made his debut for Durham in 2023 at the age of just 18. Since then, he has continued on an equally remarkable journey that is fascinating experts, fans and even himself.

McKinney scored his maiden first-class hundred only one year after his debut, proving his potential and prowess. The young batter’s aggressive style aligns with the modern approach known as “Bazball,” which has received praise from former players and commentators. Graeme Swann, a notable cricket analyst, has even compared McKinney to New Zealand great Stephen Fleming, stating he could “easily walk into Test cricket now.”

McKinney as he prepares for six County Championship matches. He views this as a golden opportunity to impress and force Southgate’s hand when it comes to an England call-up. His baptism by fire comes in the shape of Nottinghamshire on Friday in a testing opening fixture. He is looking to capitalize on the muscle from his breakout run last season.

“I got a message from one of my schoolmates saying they had seen me,” remarked McKinney, reflecting on the recognition he’s begun to receive among cricket fans. This sudden focus is not only a result of his breakout season deserving praise, but because he’s become a run scoring machine.

His first appearance for Durham was a huge fillip for him. But he joined up with the England Under-19s and immediately caught the eye. On that last tour to Australia, he struck 12 fours in a stroke-filled 45-ball 70. Most recently, he scored a magnificent 110 runs off just 110 balls against Australia A, a side featuring six full internationals. This stunning performance only bolstered his reputation as an intimidating batter.

Inspite all the buzz taking place around him, McKinney continues to keep his eyes on the prize. He admits it’s been all talk with no real contact from the England set-up directly. More than that, he has the power of having Ben Stokes in the Durham dressing room. Stokes’s impact has been decisive in guiding his touch on the game.

My dad is very old-fashioned. I would bad 50 overs for 80 runs,” McKinney said, difficult his experiences in formative years to stress how they constructed his mentality. He continued, “I used to love batting for time but somehow that flicked a switch, probably at a good time.”

The inaugural ICC U19 T20 World Cup player of the tournament has mastered that most important of arts, to absorb pressure and apply it to his opponents. “There was a period I was probably going too hard but trying to find that balance has been the most important thing for my success this winter,” he explained.

McKinney cuts an imposing figure at 6ft 7in and his aggressive batting style is a good match for the Bazball philosophy. He has an immense desire to be consistent and play in all formats of the game. He names Alastair Cook as an inspiration from his formative years. “I loved the way he did it…I will be happy keeping him as my role model,” McKinney stated.

Ben’s dad, Neil McKinney, was a star cricketer at Seaham Harbour Cricket Club. His support has been crucial in forging Ben’s career. “He was relentless and wouldn’t let me leave,” McKinney recalled about his father’s influence on his cricketing journey.

Building on this base, McKinney wants to keep the runs coming, which he refers to as “your currency” in cricket. “I will just keep doing what I am doing and hopefully get opportunities,” he said confidently.
