Richard Sherman, the former NFL star best known for his role in the Seattle Seahawks’ famous Legion of Boom defense, recently made headlines for alarming reasons. Take driving under the influence (DUI), for example. Even beyond her most recent arrest, the 37-year-old athlete’s missteps this season have put her in the spotlight after a number of public blowups.
On Tuesday, officers formally charged Daniel with the DUI offense. This was only a day after Washington State Patrol Crime Lab had sent the King County Prosecutor’s Office the blood-test results. The findings indicated that Sherman had a blood alcohol concentration of approximately 0.11. This was above the legal limit of 0.08 in Washington state. At approximately 2 a.m. on February 24, Sherman’s Tesla was stopped by the officer with the Washington State Patrol. The officer claimed to have radar-ed the vehicle going 79 mph in a 60 mph zone and observed it making lane deviations in its own lane on I-405 in Renton.
Along with the DUI charge itself, typically a gross misdemeanor, Sherman is facing an enhancement penalty. This is due to a penalty for refusing to take a breath test at the scene of the stop and then later at a WSP office. After these refusals, he was transported to a hospital to undergo an involuntary blood draw. His arraignment is scheduled for June 30.
This incident is just the latest chapter in Sherman’s dark history with the law. In 2022, he pled down to negligent driving in the first degree and criminal trespass in second degree. The charges stemmed from an arrest in July 2021. He subsequently attempted to run his SUV into an occupied construction site and break into his in-law’s home after that.
Earlier this month, Sherman was arrested and charged with a series of recent home-invasion-style burglaries targeting the homes of current and former pro athletes. These burglary charges have nothing to do with his ongoing DUI case.
Sherman enjoyed a successful 11-year career in the NFL, making five Pro Bowl appearances and being a key member of the Seahawks team that won Super Bowl XLVIII. It’s off the field where his achievements really shine. At the same time, his recent legal challenges play out in the national public eye.
As he prepares for his upcoming arraignment, Sherman is under fire. This is a painful moment for him, both as a former player and as the man now facing the very real threat of legal penalization. It remains to be seen how nonprofits and sports fans across the country will be affected by this latest charge.
