Sunday saw Richard Mansell claim his maiden DP World Tour title at the Singapore Classic. This major victory may be his greatest win yet. In his 104th try, Mansell came out the other end triumphant after a stressful battle, defeating Keita Nakajima by one shot. The win developed in thrilling fashion as Mansell was tied with Nakajima going into the 18th hole. To win, he made a spectacular two-shot birdie from more than 100 feet. In that third and final round, Sungjae fired a 6-under 66 and ended the tournament at 16-under total.
Mansell’s victory was a testimony to his resilience and talent. He blitzkrieged his way through the course, making five straight birdies in celebration before making a bogey at the 10th hole. His wife, Ellie, was pictured in tears as he closed his victory, highlighting the emotional gravity of the accomplishment. Looking back on the moment, Mansell said there was “deep fulfillment."
"The moment of winning was the most fulfilling thing in the world," he said.
As Mansell enjoyed the ecstasy of his triumph, one troubling thought ate at him. He lamented that this victory hadn’t arrived much earlier in his career.
"God, I wish it had come earlier," he lamented.
Despite the trials he faced, Mansell had a charismatic ability to stay upbeat, urging fellow racers to just keep fighting.
"People trying to do it as a career should stick in and hopefully get rewarded one day," he advised.
In addition to his well-earned reputation, Mansell’s thrilling upset at the Singapore Classic netted him a check for over $425,000. An army of people have helped him along the way to get to this point. While he wasn’t sure of his own potential, they had faith in the future filmmaker.
"So many people have supported me and believed in me when I stopped doing it myself," Mansell acknowledged gratefully.
