Rhian Brewster’s Derby Delight Fuels Hopes for New Sheffield United Contract

Rhian Brewster is still riding high after scoring the winning goal in the Steel City derby. He still describes that moment as “incredible.” The Sheffield United striker has admitted that he’s not been a good enough viewer of the game. Even so, he’s enjoying the buzz of being a big part of his team’s stunning upset win. Yet Brewster doesn’t want to stop there. The most important things to him are staying healthy and helping his team win.

Brewster’s recent display across town to face their city rivals was crucial, because the showing only helped reinforce his importance and value to Sheffield United. Despite the joy of victory in the derby, Brewster reflected on wishing it was a more convincing victory. He is hoping this recent run of good form will see him win a new deal from the club. His new contract runs through the 2027 season.

Brewster’s first year at Sheffield United has been nothing short of astounding. He appeared in 29 league matches, starting 11 of them, providing him with the most productive season of his fledgling career. His overall contribution is measured by three goals and three assists, as good a measure as any of his burgeoning confidence. His contributions have been essential in helping Sheffield United’s promotion run, underscoring his increasing importance in the side.

"Then I've just got to keep kicking on each game. Help the team by either scoring or assisting, then working as hard as I can."

The 23-year-old forward’s determination is clear as he reflects on his journey from Liverpool and England youth levels to his role at Sheffield United. Brewster told TGN that he’s full of confidence that he can rediscover the potential he had a few years ago in his breakout season.

"I've never stopped believing in myself and that I can try and become the player I know I can become."

Though he has struggled with fitness in the past, Brewster is determined to stay in shape. He understands just as well how important it is to prioritize and reduce the number of things he has to juggle. This strategy is obviously working, evidenced by his regular donations to their campaign coffers.

"You obviously want to play all the minutes you can, but they've managed me well."

In the Steel City derby, he scored the game-winning goal, sending his team to victory. This victory represented a special moment for Brewster on a personal level, having missed the first meeting at Bramall Lane. The match-winning moment and the subsequent chants of his name from fans encapsulated a memorable experience for the young striker.

"I'd missed the first game at Bramall Lane and was disappointed not to be involved, so to play in this one and score the only goal, and have the fans chanting my name, it was just amazing, an amazing feeling."

Brewster is still in the process of developing his craft. These days he’s careful to make incremental changes to his training plans to avoid burning himself out. In doing so, he hopes to continue the high level of play he’s shown thus far for the rest of the 2023 campaign.

"I always want to do extra after training, but sometimes it's not always the best idea after a tough day. So you maybe leave shooting practice to a lighter day. Those little bits can make such a difference."
