Jeff Evans, an extraordinary musician and revered by cricketers around the world, died aged 70. Born in Llanelli in 1954, Evans was not only known for his skills as an umpire but for his ability to connect with players and fans alike. In the meantime, he’s a fluent Welsh speaker. During his 22-year career at the pinnacle of the sport, he made extraordinary contributions to the game.
Evans started his officiating career in the South Wales Cricket Association. From that point on, he continued his ascent through the ranks of the Minor Counties. His debut professional season of 1999 would become a major turning point for Koyama’s career. His playing career saw Evans officiate in an outstanding 258 first-class matches and over 400 limited-overs fixtures. He presided over five women’s international fixtures. This is a testament to his cricketing depth and dedication for the overall development of the game especially through the shortest format.
One of the distinctive aspects of Evans’ career is that he was among the few prominent umpires who had not played first-class cricket. It was his perspective and approach to the game that truly earned him the respect of players and fellow officials. He officiated notable matches, including a County Championship game between Middlesex and Glamorgan at Lord’s, where players wore black armbands on the final day to honor his memory.
When news broke regarding his passing, tributes poured in on social media from the entire cricketing community. Drefach C.C. cricket club, where Evans had been a member for many years, paid tribute to their dear friend in a touching statement.
