Sean Taylor, a formidable presence on the football field, arrived in Washington as the fifth overall pick in the 2004 NFL Draft. That 6-foot-2, 230-pound safety went on to be a foundation of the Washington franchise, playing there until 2007. His contributions to the game and his legacy live on, still resonating in every corner of the organization and amongst the team’s fans.
While with Washington, Taylor established himself as a two-time Pro Bowler. As a result, he put his superb skills and astonishing versatility on the field. In 2007, he was posthumously honored as a second-team All-Pro. This milestone only served to cement his place as one of the greats, all-time franchise greats. Tragically, Taylor’s life was cut short by gun violence in November of 2007, but his legacy surely lives on.
Taylor was known as a committed spirit, and Washington coach Dan Quinn had plenty of good things to say about her.
“I love seeing guys like him really go for it.” – Dan Quinn
In honor of Taylor’s impact, Washington retired his legendary No. 21 jersey. He wore this jersey during his last three seasons with the team. This tribute is a reflection of the tremendous influence he has had. It serves as a haunting reminder of the astounding talent that used to dazzle the field.
Beyond football, Taylor’s legacy extends to literature. He wrote or co-wrote four Brooklyn-inspired children’s books, reflecting his energetic spirit, creativity and selfless desire to uplift and inspire others through his unique Brooklyn tale.
Gabe Taylor, Sean’s younger brother, expressed his admiration for Sean’s resilience and determination in the face of adversity. He stated:
“I’m the type of person that thrives on critics.” – Gabe Taylor
In doing so, Gabe painted a picture of his own hopes to walk in his brother’s footsteps, showcasing both pride and youthful ambition.
“I think I’m a pretty good player. I’m very versatile; you can go watch the film. It speaks for itself.” – Gabe Taylor
He expressed his enthusiasm at joining the Washington franchise, noting that,
“Coming here I couldn’t ask for nothing better.” – Gabe Taylor
Gabe knows that he and Sean are regularly compared against one another. It doesn’t bother him—at least not enough to stop him from beating them.
“I don’t care what people say about my height and they want to compare me to him, but it doesn’t matter.” – Gabe Taylor
Washington remembers Sean Taylor with the utmost respect and veneration. His legacy still inspires current players and fans of the game, too. His extraordinary talent, dedication to the game, and lasting influence will always be remembered in the annals of football history.
