Rehan Ahmed once again showcased his batting prowess, scoring an impressive 119 runs for Leicestershire during a County Championship match against Kent at Canterbury. It was a brilliant performance and helped ensure that Leicestershire became Division Two leaders. Yet, it proved his mettle to flourish in spite of tough circumstances.
Ahmed’s innings was one of impressive maturity, as he dealt with the overcast conditions and a seamer-friendly deck. He brought up his half-century in style, teeing off Wes Agar for a maximum over backward square to bring up the 50 with a 92-metre six. This incident on the field served as a fulfillment of his intimidating on-bat style. He blasted three sixes and 17 fours.
The only thing that could have stolen the spotlight from Ahmed’s masterclass was a record-breaking opening partnership with Rishi Patel. They constructed a tremendous partnership of 164 runs for the second wicket. Described as a ‘wonderful knock’, this resolute partnership anchored the innings and gave Leicestershire the freedom to put on a defendable score. Ahmed completed his century by turning a single to leg off Matt Parkinson. His teammates, and his fans, went crazy, celebrating the historic moment with him.
Though the weather was bleak, Ahmed’s electric style of batting set him apart. His batting was marked by a hyper-aggression, privilege and freedom from fear, underscored by his willingness to humiliate opposition bowlers. His innings came to a close when Michael’s brother Tawanda Muyeye took a sensational catch. He plucked the ball off Parkinson’s bowling at ankle height.
