Michael Oliver, a distinguished referee, encountered significant backlash following his decision to issue a straight red card to Myles Lewis-Skelly during the Wolverhampton Wanderers vs. Arsenal match. The incident occurred when Lewis-Skelly fouled Matt Doherty near the edge of the Wolves box. The challenge was deemed extremely late, with a high point of contact. Darren England, the VAR official, reviewed and confirmed the decision, categorizing it as "serious foul play" based on video evidence.
The Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) defended Oliver's decision, emphasizing that the challenge was both late and high. Arsenal is expected to appeal the dismissal, which means Lewis-Skelly will potentially miss several critical matches, including Arsenal's home game against Manchester City, the second leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final with Newcastle, and a Premier League trip to Leicester on February 15.
In a contrasting decision during the same match, Joao Gomes received only a yellow card for a similarly high and late tackle on Arsenal's Jurrien Timber in the second half. This inconsistency in officiating decisions sparked further debate among fans and analysts.
The PGMOL expressed its support for all investigations into the online abuse directed at Michael Oliver, stating they were "appalled" by the level of vitriol on social media.
"We are appalled by the threats and abuse directed at Michael Oliver following the Wolverhampton Wanderers v Arsenal fixture." – PGMOL
Renowned Sky Sports analyst Jamie Redknapp commented on the incident, acknowledging that although Oliver's decision was contentious, it did not warrant the subsequent abuse.
"He does get him on the ankle, so it's not a great challenge – let's get that straight. But he absolutely doesn't deserve that abuse." – Jamie Redknapp
Similarly, Sky Sports' Tim Sherwood expressed his disagreement with the red card decision, while Arsenal's manager Mikel Arteta refrained from criticizing the referee directly.
"I cannot believe Michael Oliver has sent Lewis-Skelly off there." – Tim Sherwood
"It is that clear and I will leave it to you guys." – Mikel Arteta
PGMOL highlighted the seriousness of threats directed at referees and their families, emphasizing that no official should endure such treatment.
"No official should be subject to any form of abuse, let alone the abhorrent attacks aimed at Michael and his family over the past 24 hours." – PGMOL
The organization reiterated its commitment to supporting investigations into these threats and ensuring a safer environment for match officials.
"Sadly, this is not the first time a match official has been forced to deal with threats in recent times. We will continue to support all investigations." – PGMOL
