Patrick Reed and Harold Varner III both put on phenomenal performances at Maridoe Golf Club. They both carded matching 5-under 67s on Friday in Round 1 of LIV Golf Dallas. Their stunning performances have propelled them to the top of the leaderboard. Now, they ride into the later rounds of the tournament with all the momentum.
Reed proved himself to be a clutch player and tremendous talent on the course. He made an eagle on the demanding, 655-yard, par-5 second hole and contributed four birdies in a staggering round. This falter came in the form of one bogey that made his otherwise brilliant showing feel a little less exceptional.
Likewise, Varner let his actions do the talking with six birdies on his card. Despite a closing bogey that prevented him from a potentially higher score, his overall play kept him tied with Reed for the lead. Golfers on both teams showed impressive swagger and steadiness on a demanding course, paving the way to an exhilarating final bout.
In a crowded field of star players, Abraham Ancer stood out with an impressive opening day score of 69. At the same time, 5 players—Dustin Johnson, Graeme McDowell, Anirban Lahiri, Richard Bland, and David Puig—all shot 70. Based on their performances, it is sure to be a tightly contested field as the tournament goes on.
Joaquín Niemann was never able to get things going today. Sadly, he capped the round with a final 78, leaving him even farther back in the field from the leaders. The mixed scores around the players exemplify the unpredictable, cutthroat nature of LIV Golf Dallas.
Even as the tournament continues at Maridoe Golf Club, all eyes are still on Reed and Varner. They’re not going to give up their lead without a fight! The second round is sure to be crucial as these talented golfers aim to make their mark and qualify for this high-stakes tournament.
