In a see-sawing contest, the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) held their nerve to narrowly escape with defeat over the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) by two runs. That scintillating end played out at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium on Sunday night. RCB’s Romario Shepherd electrified the match with a brilliant bowling performance. He smashed an incredible 53 runs off only 14 balls, hitting the second-fastest IPL half-century in history.
RCB posted a mammoth total of 213 runs in their 20 overs, 213-5. Virat Kohli and Jacob Bethell gave their respective teams a solid start with an opening partnership of 97 runs. Kohli struck 62 and Bethell scored 55 as RCB crossed 200 to set a daunting target.
Unfazed, Chennai Super Kings came to the bat and battled fiercely, wrapping up their innings at 211-5. Ayush was the star performer for CSK, scoring a blistering 94 runs. He shared a vital third wicket stand of 114 runs with Ravindra Jadeja, who played aggressively and remained not out on 77 runs. In spite of their valiant chase, CSK came up three runs short of the target.
Lungi Ngidi’s impressive bowling helped RCB maintain control during CSK’s innings. He removed both Ayush and then Dewald Brevis with back-to-back deliveries, ending with impressive figures of 3-30. Matheesha Pathirana played a significant role, taking three wickets for 36 runs, as he sought to turn the game in CSK’s favor.
Shepherd’s rollicking batting in the death overs turned out to be crucial for RCB’s success. His clean hitting fifty quick-fired the Championship crowd into sixes and sevens. It turned the tide in favor of RCB at a key time in the match.
RCB’s Dayal brought them back into the game with his brilliant final-over bowling. When the pressure was on, he shined and game after game he led his team to victory.
