This 24-year-old rookie is dealing with the daunting task of replacing future Hall of Famer Justin Tucker. Chosen in the sixth round of this year’s NFL Draft, Loop became a pioneer. He was the first kicker ever drafted by the Ravens in their 30-year history. Loop is the only kicker on the roster with John Hoyland waived. So far throughout training camp, Loop has looked as if she is bursting with talent and confidence.
Loop has been incredibly accurate in team drills. He made 51 of his 55 field goal attempts, good for a staggering 92.7% conversion rate. His showing at M&T Bank Stadium only made the case stronger for him as a deep sleeper to win that starting job. During a recent practice at the historic arena, Loop missed none of his 11 field goal tries. He even nailed jaw-dropping kicks from jaw-dropping distances of 56 and 60 yards!
Loop had best not be awed in return, though, for Ravens head coach John Harbaugh has said that Loop is “kicking well enough to win the job.” This brilliant endorsement speaks to not just Loop’s talent, but his calmness in high-stress situations. Harbaugh acknowledged the unique challenge associated with playing in front of fans at M&T Bank Stadium, saying, “You’re going into the stadium, and all the fans are going to be watching you.”
Loop’s confidence has certainly seeped into his teammates as well. With each of Loop’s recent feats, Ravens’ punter Jordan Stout said Loop’s achievements in practice have without a doubt pumped up his confidence. Loop’s skill to kick a 60-yard field goal — and then celebrate with a twirling dance move — left an indelible mark.
In discussing his mindset, Loop shared, “I think it can be pressure if you focus on it.” He underscored his method of proving that enjoyment comes before the expectations burden. “One thing we talk about is just staying loose and just enjoying it,” he noted. His determination to keep a sunny disposition even while being flamed in the press shows he’s prepared to face the fire to come.
During one of the practices, Loop reflected on his successful kick with enthusiasm, stating, “The second it left my foot, I’m like, ‘There we go.’” This scene captures Loop’s swagger and focus as he prepares to take on one of the most pressure-filled roles in sports.
The Ravens’ tracking system proved Loop’s jaw-dropping expertise. To the surprise of many, it proved that one of his kicks could succeed from an incredible distance of 67 yards. This one underscores his huge leg to boot. It furthers his case for being a significant asset on the Ravens’ special teams.
