Ravens Signal Intent with Signing of Jaire Alexander

The Baltimore Ravens have just pulled off a sly move. And they’ve signed veteran cornerback Jaire Alexander to a one-year deal worth up to $6 million, with $2 million in performance bonuses. Alexander, a two-time Pro Bowler and an All-Pro in 2020 and 2022, was released by the Green Bay Packers on June 9. This choice came on the heels of two injury-ridden seasons in a row.

At 28 years old, Alexander still has the potential to be a veteran presence with an impressive career total of 287 tackles, 12 interceptions and 70 passes defensed. His recent past gives anyone pause. He’s been available for just 34 of 68 possible games since the beginning of the 2021 season. The Packers had him slated to make $17.5 million this year alone. Since that money wasn’t certain, they chose to cut him loose.

Alexander’s arrival bolsters a thin Ravens secondary. Collectively, they form one of the most intimidating defensive backfields in the entire NFL. He’ll be teaming up with current starting cornerback Nate Wiggins and current starting NFL slot cornerback Marlon Humphrey. The Ravens’ secondary already features first-round draft picks at cornerback and safety, including Marlon Humphrey, Nate Wiggins, Kyle Hamilton, and Malaki Starks.

>With this signing, Alexander will join quarterback Lamar Jackson again. They played side-by-side for the Cardinals from 2015-17 while at the University of Louisville. Jackson was a big proponent of Alexander’s signing, even going so far as to instruct Ravens GM Eric DeCosta, “Go get him, Eric.” That sense of camaraderie may benefit them as they look to build on the improved performance of the team.

Defensive back Marlon Humphrey shared his excitement about the addition of Alexander. He stated, “We’ve got too many corners who can cover,” adding, “I think that’s a great problem to have.” Kyle Hamilton echoed this sentiment, praising Alexander’s skills: “He’s been one of the best in this league since he got in it.”

With Jaire Alexander now joining the fold, the Ravens are prepared to have a huge impact on defense. This signing will strengthen not just their defense, but their happy locker room vibes. His experience and talent, though, might be invaluable as the squad looks to right the ship during a new campaign.
