Rangers Football Club finds itself in a critical phase as it searches for a new head coach following the departure of Russell Martin, the club’s first permanent head coach in 153 years. Sporting Director Kevin Thelwell is currently spearheading the search to find their new manager. He is currently meeting frequently with important players such as Chairman Andrew Cavenagh, Vice Chairman Paraag Marathe and CEO Patrick Stewart to court candidates. Amidst these discussions, Kevin Muscat, the current manager of Yokohama F. Marinos, has emerged as the frontrunner for the position.
The need for this quest became more urgent than ever though. This change came after Steven Gerrard’s first contact with Rangers, and their overtures to bring him back began. Gerrard’s rejoining the team was a toss up for a different reason, as timing eventually pushed him to back out of coming. His decision leaves Rangers in pursuit of a suitable candidate who can lead the team forward in a competitive environment.
The club’s new management team have been shrewd in their search for candidates. The next Kevin Kevin Thelwell has been talking the talk in London, meeting with a number of candidates who expressed interest in the role. This initiative reflects the club’s commitment to finding an effective leader who can reinvigorate the team following a period of uncertainty.
Aside from Muscat, a number of other names have popped up in relation to the Gers’ managerial vacancy at Ibrox. Former Southampton boss Ralph Hasenhuttl is the early favourite for the post. His candidacy is still very much in doubt as of this writing. Rumours suggest that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, the former Manchester United manager, had spoken with Rangers. It’s still not clear whether he is even still a candidate for the position.
Danny Rohl, a man who emerged as a leading candidate after his impressive time at Sheffield Wednesday, has removed himself from contention. At the same time, Bo Svensson, who had been widely mentioned as an ideal candidate to replace Wilmot, has been completely taken out of the running. Rangers is completing its candidate search. They are looking for dogged pursuers of talent who can bring experience and success home to the club.
Kevin Muscat has made quite a name for himself as the post of director of tolling. He’s done it before as a successful manager with experience in Australia, Japan, and China. His experience winning silverware in three different countries makes him an interesting candidate. A competitive club trying to get their edge back would be foolish not to hire him.
As Rangers presses on in its search for a new permanent head coach, interim internal candidates are in play as well. Neil McCann, another former Rangers player, is set to be appointed as interim boss. He will take over if Muscat is unable to take the position immediately. This contingency plan is a testament to the club’s commitment to ensuring continuity in this transitional period.
Rangers has a history of managerial turnover, including an incredible 19 permanent managers before Russell Martin’s recent appointment. This background all but guarantees the difficulty facing any leadership charged with balancing performance on the pitch and the expectations of the wider off-field Scottish football family.
