Rangers Football Club have completed the signing of Youssef Chermiti from Everton for a club-record £10 million. The 21-year-old forward is the latest addition to the Scottish club. His duty to purchase was activated last summer following a productive loan spell at Ibrox. Chermiti now has 21 appearances under his belt at Rangers. Over that stretch, he netted one goal and registered two assists, further proving his excitement and potential at the highest level.
The transfer specifics show that originally Rangers only put down £8 million, on top of which was a contingent £2 million in add-ons based on performance. Sporting director Kevin Thelwell was largely responsible for the transfer of Chermiti from Sporting Lisbon to Everton for £15 million two years ago. Now, he’s understandably ecstatic to continue bringing the young talent to Rangers.
He stated, “I am delighted to welcome Youssef to Rangers. I know his character well from our time at Everton, and I’ve always been impressed by his attitude, professionalism, and hunger to improve.”
Newest head coach Martin was understandably elated with the signing. He agreed with Chermiti’s ability to flourish when put in the right situation. He remarked, “I am really pleased to bring Youssef Chermiti to Rangers. He will shine further in a Rangers jersey.”
Chermiti’s story on the professional football circuit hadn’t even started, having just made the jump from Sporting Lisbon to the wealthy world of the Premier League. Though he didn’t score with every opportunity that came his way in 24 starts and appearances for Everton, his play showed flashes of potential and development. Now back at Rangers on a four-year deal, he wants to keep improving his game in that encouraging environment.
As he looks ahead to this exciting new chapter, Chermiti couldn’t be more excited to continue helping the RedBulls reach their goals. “I am really happy to be here. When I spoke with Kevin and Russell [Martin], I knew straight away that I wanted to join the club,” he stated. He added, “I can’t wait to meet everyone, the coaches, my team-mates and all of the staff. I just want to get involved.”
In addition to Chermiti’s signing, Rangers have secured Derek Cornelius on loan, further bolstering their squad for the upcoming season. Cornelius has plenty of experience of top-flight football. He spoke of the pride of taking the field for a club with such an invested and passionate fanbase. “What excited me is that it is such a massive club with such a passionate fanbase so that is always exciting playing in front of fans that are going to support you and really push you over the edge,” he remarked.
Both players prove another smart forward-thinking move by Rangers as they continue to fine-tune their squad depth and overall starting talent level. Cornelius provides significant leadership and experience to the back line. Coupled with Chermiti’s youthful exuberance, they will dig for glory in both domestic and European fields.
