Rangers Football Club is doing a wonderful job in getting ready for next season. In his shadow, though, was a real takeover looming. Former owner Andrew Cavenagh headed a consortium that was on its way to taking a 51 percent control of the club. They hope to close the deal by early June. Rangers are facing a huge inflection point as they search for a new head coach. This transition opens up an exciting new chapter for the team.
The acquisition will also attract major investment from 49ers Enterprises, the investment branch of the NFL’s San Francisco 49ers. As the club positions itself for the future, CEO Patrick Stewart has confirmed that the search for a new head coach is progressing well. He expressed optimism about concluding the process in the near future, signaling a commitment to finding a suitable candidate who can restore Rangers’ competitive edge.
Coaching Candidates Emerge
Steven Gerrard has reportedly emerged as a contender for the managerial job at Ibrox. He initially brought the club success during his first spell in charge, winning the Scottish Premiership title in 2021. His knowledge of the club’s culture and history makes him an obvious candidate to re-take the short cab ride to Ibrox.
Perhaps the most high-profile dark horse in the running is Davide Ancelotti, son of legendary manager Carlo Ancelotti. He’s done it for years, helping his father at big clubs like Bayern Munich, Napoli, Everton and Real Madrid. His USL experience combined with his coaching pedigree would make him an alluring hire for Rangers as they look for new leadership.
Additionally, several other candidates are being considered. Carlo Ancelotti will bring in Paul Clement, former right-hand man of both Ancelotti and Guus Hiddink, to replace Clarke, according to multiple reports. He’s not really tied to the Rangers position. Danny Rohl, currently the manager of Sheffield Wednesday, has drawn attention from multiple clubs including Southampton, while Russell Martin, a former manager of Southampton and Swansea, is on the shortlist. Other candidates Rob Edwards, the former head coach of Luton Town, is an early favorite for the position. Another name to keep an eye on would be Gary O’Neil, previously of Bournemouth and Wolves.
Stewart’s comments suggest that the club is indeed being careful and considerate in making this all-important hiring decision.
“Every appointment is a gamble. It doesn’t matter who you are, if you’ve managed 500 games or you’re a novice. They cannot afford to take this risk.” – Kris Boyd
Transition and Future Goals
The Rangers are one announcement away from hiring their 20th permanent manager. During this period, the club is radically changing its brand image and business model. Cavenagh’s consortium intends to completely replace the organization’s leadership. They hope to bring a new perspective and energy, and to help push through some of the recent struggles it has faced.
Russell Martin has long been a proponent of stronger managerial leadership to drive accountability and change on teams.
“I look at Rangers right now and there has been a loss of identity for a period of time. The recruitment has to get better. Rangers have to improve and to do that, you’ve got to have an experienced manager.” – Russell Martin
It’s a position that many fans and other stakeholders agree with. On the domestic front, they are keen to see the Rangers recapture their historic supremacy and dominance in both domestic and European competitions.
The recent departure of Barry Ferguson complicates this transitional time even further. Ferguson’s exit underscores the urgency for Rangers to solidify its management team as it faces heightened competition within Scottish football.
Looking Ahead
With the takeover expected to be finalised by early June, Rangers are set for a monumental shifting of the tides. Cavenagh’s consortium is bringing in new leadership. This team is poised to completely overhaul the club’s approach to management and re-establish the club’s overall strategic path.
Yet as Stewart continues to charge forward in search of a new head coach, he knows that each move comes with consequences. We don’t have to tell you about the pressure to appoint a candidate who will be able to deliver results and restore pride among supporters.
