Rangers Coach Russell Martin Welcomes Competition as Max Aarons Joins on Loan

The Famous has made some quality additions to the squad! Most importantly, they’ve finally managed to land Max Aarons on a season-long loan from Bournemouth. Aarons was very good on his home debut in the most recent match against Club Brugge. He was unique among the new signings in starting the game on the field. This intentional addition is welcomed by new head coach Russell Martin and falls right into his plan to increase competition on the squad.

Last season, Aarons didn’t have much of an opportunity to change that, playing only 338 minutes combined at Bournemouth and Valencia. However, Martin is optimistic about the defender’s potential and feels his addition will enhance Martin’s current crop of players. Importantly, Martin emphasized the need for competition, stating, “If you play for Rangers, there needs to be a level of discomfort or uncertainty about your role in the team.”

Rangers’ captain, James Tavernier, who featured in 53 matches across all competitions last season, faces a new challenge with Aarons’ arrival. Martin challenged Tavernier to earn his spot on the team. Still, he’s very enthusiastic about their potential to operate in concert with the structure and philosophy of the team.

“There’s definitely a chance that Max and Tav can be on the same pitch together for sure.” – Russell Martin

With Aarons now on board, enthusiasm is returning to the Rangers. They had to plan for prodigy Robin Propper leaving for FC Twente. Sport, the Dutch paper Wegener ran a story saying that the club have already agreed on a deal for the defender to return to the Dutch side. In other news, Rangers are reportedly still near to completing another signing, with Sheffield Wednesday winger Djeidi Gassama on the horizon.

According to Football League World, Rangers are considering a move for Hull City winger Abu Kamara. This highlights their aggressive approach to add to the roster as they get ready for the 2022 campaign.

Russell Martin’s vision for the Rangers is not just to improve competition but adding a new intangible element to the squad. The blend of experienced players like Tavernier alongside fresh talent such as Aarons may provide the necessary depth for a successful campaign.
