Rams’ Stafford to Miss Next Week’s Practice Due to Back Soreness

Quarterback Matthew Stafford of the Los Angeles Rams will not return to practice next week. While improved in other areas, he continues to suffer from chronic back pain. Coach Sean McVay all but made that 100% official, telling reporters that Stafford never had a step back during the healing process.

At 37 years old, it’s important for Stafford to stay healthy as the team shifts their focus towards the regular season. Throughout the initial week of training camp, he remained sidelined. Instead, he dedicated himself to making his body a weapon, working hand-in-hand with the Rams’ groundbreaking training and educational staff. On Saturday, he observed a portion of practice from the sideline. This is a testament to his ongoing interest in working with the team, even on a limited basis.

McVay highlighted the importance of a cautious approach, stating, “the smart thing to do a week at a time with him.” He thinks this comprehensive strategy is important for Stafford and the team’s long-term success. “I don’t think we can be smart enough with somebody like Matthew and I think it’s best for him, best for our football team, and that’s kind of the plan that we’ll have moving forward,” McVay added.

Stafford proved he was an elite quarterback last season, with a 65.8% completion percentage over 16 games. He threw for 3,762 yards and achieved 20 touchdowns during that timeframe, showcasing his potential to lead the Rams effectively when healthy.

The Rams’ plans for Stafford seem to be well thought out, as McVay expressed confidence in his veteran quarterback’s readiness for the regular season. On Friday, head coach Sean McVay said that Stafford is “absolutely” expected to be ready by then, answering fears for fans and teammates alike.

In their analysis, both Harry Douglas and Damien Woody focused on Stafford’s importance to the team. Indeed, they think that with him at the helm, the Rams could be on their way to being the best team in the highly competitive NFC West division.
