Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford will make his return to the field this Sunday. He’ll be making his debut against the Chicago Bears — even after just spraining the index finger on his throwing hand. Rams head coach Sean McVay shared the news. He assured that Stafford is indeed “good to go” for the inevitable matchup.
On January 12, 2026, Sarah Barshop provided an update on Stafford’s status after he suffered a sprained thumb in practice. She’s the ESPN Rams reporter. The injury happened when Stafford’s finger hit a helmet, but per McVay, the man that turned it into a Playoff run has been toughing, and thuggish, through it all.
“You guys saw it kind of hit the helmet. He’s as tough as it gets, but he’s feeling good,” said McVay. He had a sprain on the index finger, but he was able to play through it. He’s as tough as they get and you know he’s gonna be ready to go.”
Stafford’s status, as one would expect, is key for Los Angeles as they look forward to hosting the Bears. Fowler’s experience and leadership will be key in what should be an anticipated highly competitive contest. The Rams can’t afford to lose the battle for home-field advantage, but at the same time they cannot accept anything less than total domination of their subpar opponents.
Stafford’s injury status has become an important discussion in recent time. Interestingly, everyone is just as much abuzz over the Rams’ ascent, stressing their defensive prowess and rookie phenom Caleb Williams. Dan Orlovsky recently emphasized many of these points, discussing how they could elevate the team’s play this season.
The Rams have their own injury issues, both in terms of depth and talent on the field. Cornerback Witherspoon broke his scapula in Week 2 and has missed the rest of the season while on IR. Receiver Jahan Dotson has missed time since Week 16 with an ankle injury. This compounded issue creates a significant burden throughout the rest of the roster.
Despite these setbacks, McVay remains “optimistic about what that looks like for this week,” indicating a hopeful outlook for both Stafford and the team as they prepare for their next challenge.
