Rams Grant Permission for Guard Jonah Jackson to Seek Trade Amid Financial Implications

The Los Angeles Rams have granted guard Jonah Jackson permission to explore trade opportunities, a decision that carries significant financial ramifications for the team. Jackson, who inked a three-year, $51 million deal in March 2024, would result in an $11.3 million dead money hit if traded before June 1. Despite his talent, the Rams' financial constraints and Jackson's recent injury history have prompted this move.

Jackson's time with the Rams has been marred by injuries, limiting him to just four games last season. After sustaining a shoulder injury during the training camp, he returned at the start of the regular season but aggravated the injury in Week 2, leading to his placement on injured reserve. Upon recovery, he played in just one game before being benched.

A Pro Bowl selection in 2021 and originally the 75th pick in the 2020 NFL draft, Jackson spent his initial four seasons with the Detroit Lions before joining the Rams. Despite his recent setbacks, head coach Sean McVay praised Jackson's professionalism throughout the challenging 2024 season.

"I really appreciate Jonah on how he handled [the situation]," – Sean McVay

Jackson's contract includes an $8.5 million guarantee due on March 14 and a $9 million base salary scheduled for 2025. These financial commitments add pressure on the Rams' salary cap, influencing their decision to allow Jackson to seek a trade. However, his skills remain highly regarded within the league.

"A starting-level player… there are a lot of teams that would love to have Jonah Jackson at guard." – Sean McVay

Jackson's departure could offer other teams a valuable asset at guard while providing the Rams with potential salary cap relief. His reputation as a starting-level player and previous Pro Bowl recognition make him an attractive candidate for teams in need of strengthening their offensive line.
