Rams Bolster Defense with Acquisition of Cornerback Roger McCreary

The Los Angeles Rams have bolstered their defense with the addition of cornerback Roger McCreary from the Tennessee Titans. The Rams officially completed the trade on Monday. This savvy play leaves them in a strong position as they head into the home stretch of the shorter, post-COVID season. As part of the trade, the Titans will get a conditional fifth-round pick in 2026.

McCreary was drafted in the second round of the 2022 NFL Draft. He showed no small amount of potential already, in what was a very short career to date. That’s right, he’s been primarily a slot defender this season for Tennessee. It’s his versatility that has wowed Rams head coach Sean McVay. On passing downs, McCreary’s versatility would allow him to rotate to outside positions. This skill gives invaluable dimension to a Rams secondary that has had horrible performances throughout the season.

In only eight games this season, McCreary has racked up 33 total tackles, intercepted a pass, and logged a sack. Additionally, he has defended two passes. These numbers highlight his playmaking ability to wreak havoc in the defensive backfield. This dynamic ability might be the most important thing for the Rams as they look to end the season on a high note.

With the NT Titans now having traded away their second starting cornerback this year. Given this turn of events, the addition of McCreary is even more important and timely. The Rams are looking to reload their cornerback corps. McVay praised McCreary’s versatility as the ideal fit in Los Angeles.

“Based on some of the things that are going on with us, we felt like it was a smart move.” – Sean McVay

The Rams have been at the forefront of preventing their once-dominant defense from sinking with a ship’s-load of injuries and natural roster turnover. They traded for cornerback Jarvis Brownlee Jr. earlier in the season, indicating a concerted effort to reinforce this critical position.

This is the last year of McCreary’s rookie deal. To this end, he deeply desires to make an immediate impact with the Rams. With that, the team will further evaluate him as he progresses through the next few games. This is critical, as injuries continue to plague their roster.
