The Las Vegas Raiders have re-signed Patrick Graham as their defensive coordinator, following a turbulent 2024 season. Despite finishing 25th in scoring defense, the team aims to build on its potential under new leadership. The Raiders recently introduced Pete Carroll as head coach and John Spytek as general manager, signaling a fresh start for the franchise.
Graham's return comes after his contract expired at the end of the 2024 season. During his tenure, the Raiders grappled with numerous long-term injuries to key players, including star defender Crosby, which contributed to their defensive struggles. Despite these challenges, Graham's experience and familiarity with the team made him a valuable asset for Carroll, who expressed a desire to retain some of the previous coaching staff.
Graham's off-season was eventful, as he interviewed twice for the head coaching vacancy with the Jacksonville Jaguars. However, the Jaguars ultimately chose Liam Coen for the position. Additionally, Graham pursued an opportunity as Jacksonville's defensive coordinator but decided to stay with the Raiders.
Before joining the Raiders in 2022, Graham served as the defensive coordinator for both the Miami Dolphins and the New York Giants. He was initially brought to Las Vegas by then-coach Josh McDaniels. As part of his staff, Antonio Pierce was hired in 2022 and later served as interim coach in 2023, achieving a 5-4 record. However, Pierce was dismissed after a disappointing 4-13 season in 2024.
The Raiders' decision to retain Graham reflects their belief in his ability to revitalize their defense. With new leadership in place, the team hopes to overcome past setbacks and establish a stronger presence in the league. Carroll and Spytek emphasized their commitment to creating a competitive roster, and Graham's re-signing is a step toward achieving that goal.
