Quetta Secures PSL Top Spot with Thrilling Win Over Multan

Quetta Gladiators took the first spot in Pakistan Super League (PSL). They went on to accomplish this with a nail-biting two-wicket win over Multan Sultans. That tense final encounter took place on April 30, 2023, at National Stadium in Karachi. Quetta stamped their place on top with authority as they prepared for the April 29 qualifier against rising stars Peshawar.

After a highly competitive battle in the low scoring game, Multan Sultans gave a mammoth 186 runs target. Sadly for them, they finished the campaign with an embarrassing return of only one victory from ten games. Yasir Khan was the catalyst for Multan, scoring a quickfire 45 off 25 deliveries. He provided a strong opening partnership of 77 runs with Khawaja Nafay, who made 51 runs off 26 balls. Tariq’s stunning removal of Tayyab Tahir completely shifted the momentum in the game. Tayyab had just hit a brisk 36 off 24 balls, so his departure was a big loss for Quetta.

Despite Multan’s positive moves, Quetta’s bowlers managed to keep their heads. Usman Tariq delivered a commendable performance, taking three wickets for 32 runs, while Dilshan Madushanka’s penultimate over was particularly impressive, yielding only six runs. This restrictive bowling prevented Multan from racking up more than 185 for 7.

Quetta got off to a flyer in their chase. Hasan Nawaz was the top run scorer with a blistering 67 not out off 38 deliveries. His influence proved vital though, as he led his side across the finish line. When Abrar Ahmed tried for a second run but was run out, it induced a heart-in-mouth moment for Pakistan fans. This had left Nawaz on strike for the last delivery. With dramatic flair, once more Nawaz picked over long-off, giving Quetta the historic finish and sending the stadium into raptures.

The match proved not only the technical skills of individual player but the strategic depth of both teams. Barring a flurry of runs from Shahid Aziz and Aamer Azmat, Multan’s batting never really took off. Despite this, it was Quetta’s strong run of results that ensured they would top the league table.

That was it—the Quetta Gladiators were champions! Currently, they’re preparing to meet the second-placed team in that runner-up qualifier match-up on May 1, where they will look to continue their run of good form and secure a place in the grand final.
