Los Angeles Rams WR Puka Nacua had a historic performance last night. He rushed for 732 yards on 83 carries, averaging 8.8 yards per attempt while catching 12 passes for 225 yards and two touchdowns! This remarkable achievement marks the highest receiving yards by a Rams player since Isaac Bruce recorded 233 yards in 1997. Nacua had a record-breaking debut performance that shocked the entire league. With at least 150 receiving yards for the third straight game, he’s now tied with at least four other players for the longest streak in NFL history.
Nacua’s accolades were forgotten in the wake of recent controversy after a violent episode streamed on the House floor Tuesday. The young athlete issued a public apology for performing a gesture deemed “antisemitic in nature,” which he acknowledged perpetuated harmful stereotypes against Jewish people. In his statement, Nacua described the action as stemming from “a lack of awareness and just in some frustration.”
After the incident, Nacua rounded out his remarkable short story by having a conversation with Rams head coach Sean McVay. McVay reiterated how much he supports Nacua while acknowledging the distraction the incident created for the team. He emphasized that the focus should be on how to support Nacua and make sure he learns and develops from this experience.
“And for anybody that was offended, terribly sorry about that. I know he feels that same exact way. He’s a young guy; that’s a great kid that’s continuing to learn about, just, the platform that he has. I love him, we’re going to continue to put our arm around him and help him learn and grow,” – Sean McVay.
Nacua’s frustration continued after a narrow 38-37 overtime loss, prompting him to tweet, “Can you say I was wrong? Appreciate you stripes for your contribution. Lol.” This message indicated how he was feeling after an intense game and only brought more attention to his behavior off the field.
Nacua addressed the backlash by reinforcing his loyalty to the program. He indicated a compelling need to not be a distraction, specifically in the case of a quick week of prep. “I don’t want to be a distraction in any week and especially in a short week,” he stated. He acknowledged the need for better judgment in his comments and actions, reaffirming his commitment to focus on his responsibilities as an athlete.
As Nacua prepares for his next three games, he should prepare to see more scrutiny. Both his performances and this recent controversy will be in the spotlight. In large part due to McVay’s guidance and support, he’s concentrating on building an all-around well-rounded player. He takes just as much pride in the impact he makes off the field.
