Pieter Prinsloo, the former captain of Cape Town Tigers, has joined Rwanda Energy Group (REG) for the 2025 Rwandan Basketball League (RBL) season. The addition of Prinsloo, who played college basketball in the USA with the Marist Red Foxes, boosts REG's roster as they aim for a successful season. The RBL season began on January 24, and it is scheduled to run through late July or early August, with playoffs and finals slated for June 6-14 in Pretoria, South Africa.
REG narrowly missed qualifying for the 2025 Basketball Africa League (BAL) after falling to eventual champions Armée Patriotique Rwandaise (APR) in the semi-finals. Despite this setback, Prinsloo plans to participate in the BAL with the South African team Made By Ball (MBB).
"That's the plan at the moment. I'm going to play for REG [until MBB's BAL campaign starts], play with MBB for the BAL, and then [go] back to REG to finish the season in Rwanda." – Pieter Prinsloo
Prinsloo made an immediate impact in his debut for REG, leading them to a decisive 92-58 victory over Espoir. REG's head coach, Ogoh Odaudu, praised Prinsloo's contributions.
"He brings size because that's what we have been missing and because he can stretch the floor, it makes him even more effective for what we have going here. He made a difference in the first game already and it can only get better." – Ogoh Odaudu
The BAL will commence in Rabat, Morocco, from April 5-13 before moving to Dakar, Senegal (April 26 – May 4), and Kigali, Rwanda (May 17-25). During this period, Prinsloo is expected to transition from REG to coach Rivers Hoopers in the BAL. The final regular season game for REG is against APR on June 29.
"Obviously, things can change, but as of now, that's the whole scope of things." – Pieter Prinsloo
REG aims to build on their momentum under Odaudu's leadership. Odaudu previously led Rivers Hoopers to a third-place finish in the 2024 BAL and earned Coach of the Year honors.
Prinsloo's contract with REG had not been finalized at the time of his announcement. However, his commitment to both REG and MBB demonstrates his versatility and ambition within African basketball.
