Preston North End halted Norwich City’s play-off aspirations with a narrow 1-0 victory at Carrow Road. Milutin Osmajic scored the decisive goal just five minutes into the match, setting the tone for a game where Preston's strategy outshone Norwich's possession-heavy approach. Despite dominating ball possession, Norwich struggled to convert it into meaningful opportunities, leaving their fans and players dissatisfied.
Osmajic's early strike came as a result of a well-executed attack, catching the home side off guard. In contrast, Norwich's attempts to respond were thwarted by Preston's relentless pressing. The absence of skipper Kenny McLean due to illness seemed to affect Norwich's ability to build from the back. Their best chance before the break came from Anis Ben Slimane, whose shot was the only effort on target during the first half.
Preston's defensive resilience was evident from the start, with Ryan Porteous blocking a shot from Josh Sargent in the opening minute. Manager Paul Heckingbottom commended his team's outstanding performance, noting that they could have extended their lead with several missed opportunities.
"I thought it was a top-drawer performance from the whole group." – Paul Heckingbottom
Norwich attempted to change their fortunes with a triple substitution on the hour mark, including the withdrawal of Sargent. Despite these changes, they struggled to break down Preston’s organized defense. Shane Duffy came close to equalizing with a header from a corner, but it went just wide.
Preston nearly doubled their lead late in the game when substitute Liam Lindsay found himself in a promising position from a corner. However, his close-range header did not find the net. In the dying moments, Borja Sainz's deflected effort provided a glimmer of hope for Norwich, but it veered just wide of the goal.
Johannes Hoff Thorup, reflecting on the match, expressed disappointment with his team's inability to capitalize on their possession.
"Probably the only negative of the performance was that we missed a number of good chances and could have won more comfortably, but when you're saying that as a visiting manager here you know you have played well." – Johannes Hoff Thorup
His sentiments were echoed by the atmosphere at Carrow Road where dissatisfaction loomed.
"The fans were not satisfied and the players were not satisfied either. They tried their best but were not good enough tonight," – Johannes Hoff Thorup
