Russell Martin’s time at the helm of the Rangers has come under extreme pressure after a dreadful opening month to the season. In his first eight competitive matches, the team produced the worst results in an almost comically bad run of matches. It’s obvious that many of the original supporters of Martin are concerned. After an early September goalless draw at Fir Park, Martin admitted his side “were fortunate to even get a point.” As a result, worries about how well they are doing are growing.
Rangers have found it hard going thus far, winning just three games in all competitions this term. With the team’s poor and inconsistent performances continuing and especially coming off of three straight unconvincing performances, supporters are beginning to show their disappointment with the team. His squad are now preparing for some pivotal fixtures against St Mirren, Hearts and Celtic. With every match, the burden on Martin is increasing.
Inconsistent Performance Raises Questions
And ever since Russell Martin took the managerial reins, he’s seen his side fail to be aggressive enough in games. In 10 of Rangers’ 20 games, the other team has had more shots than them. This trend serves as a cautionary tale and the steepest challenge awaiting the team. This recent trend has most certainly left countless supporters unimpressed and sceptical about the team’s overall attitude and mentality on the pitch. Following the disappointing 1-1 draw against Dundee, which elicited boos from the home crowd, Martin openly criticized his players for their lack of urgency.
“I have to try and convince people that I’m the right person.” – Russell Martin
Though it has been a short, difficult road thus far, Martin is undeterred and focused on the bigger picture. He acknowledges that the club has experienced instability in recent years, stating that it cannot expect immediate success without enduring some difficulties. He emphasized the need for consistency, asserting, “we need to find a way to win whilst we’re developing.”
The draws and razor-thin victories have created a very real sense of nervousness on the part of supporters. The side’s difficulties were obvious in their League Cup opening fixture against Alloa Athletic. They struggled, and only eked out a one-point victory over the third-tier challenger.
Upcoming Challenges Loom Large
Rangers preparing themselves ahead of a run of difficult fixtures in the next few weeks. This is a make-or-break moment in their campaign. The upcoming fixtures against St Mirren and Hearts will test the resilience of Martin’s squad, while a fiercely anticipated clash with Celtic could either reignite hope or deepen the current crisis.
Martin recognized the difficult situation that he was handed. He told me that the club has “bounced around with various ideas” and now needs a long term plan set in stone for the future. He’s determined to remain hopeful no matter what to help inspire the team to greatness. He’s realistic in knowing that it will take time and work to get there.
“The club’s bounced around with different ideas, different plans, been hinged on emotion… but they also understand that’s not going to come without a bit of pain.” – Russell Martin
Given how they’ve played of late, fans have every right to expect to see concrete signs of progress on the court going forward. Consistency should be key if Rangers want to be true contenders in every competition.
Looking Ahead with Determination
Amid the increasing pressure and speculation over his future, Russell Martin doesn’t deny he’s having a good old time at Ibrox. He thinks that with patience and perseverance the team will eventually catch fire.
Martin expressed confidence in his vision for the club, stating, “by then we’ll be in a really good place.” His uncompromising winning attitude shines through, as he gets his team to start the preparation for the challenges to come.
Former Rangers player Martyn Ramsay offered his thoughts on Martin’s plight. He noted that Martin must start winning over the fans’ trust fast since they’ve already made up their mind on whether he can hack it. Ramsay remarked, “He had to hit the ground running for thousands of fans who pretty much made up their mind immediately. If he is to turn this around, it would be one of the most remarkable stories in the club’s history.”
