Tiger Woods, the iconic professional golfer, has had his own difficult health experience. Since the month of April 2014, he has suffered through seven back surgeries. Most recently, he underwent surgery earlier this month, in which a degenerative disk in his lower back was replaced. This herniated disk brought Woods tremendous pain and restricted his mobility. It complicated his already difficult recovery from numerous other traumas.
After all, Woods is approaching his 50th birthday on December 30. As he approaches this milestone, plans are already in place for his not-so-secret debut on the PGA Tour Champions, which is limited to players 50 and older. The PGA Tour Champions president, Miller Brady, confirmed that the organization is ready for Woods should he decide to compete.
We’re hopeful he may be able to join us, and equally excited about the prospect of him joining us. Brady stated. In truth, I’d love for Tiger to return stronger than ever following his recent surgery. I’m hoping so badly to see him back out on the golf course again!
Consider that Woods has battled some pretty serious health issues in recent years. To make matters worse, in February 2021, he was in an auto accident that shattered his right leg and ankle. In addition to this latest surgery, earlier this year he ruptured his left Achilles tendon, which has pushed his return to competitive golf nascent.
This marks the first time Woods will have played since his last appearance at December’s PNC Championship in 2022. As it was, back then, he came up short in a playoff. With the potential for using carts and participating in 54-hole tournaments, the PGA Tour Champions offers a more accommodating environment for players recovering from injuries.
The PGA Tour Champions could provide an opportunity for Woods to ease back into the sport while managing his health concerns. The softer structure of the tour makes it possible for older players to compete without the physical toll of the typical PGA courses.
Even the preparations for Woods’ likely entry into the tour speak to the excitement and in some way, weirdness of his return. Ordinary golf fans and professional players alike are anxious to watch and witness if Woods can once again ascend back into the world of competitive golf.
