The Kansas City Chiefs secured a decisive 30-17 victory against the Detroit Lions, but the win was marred by a postgame altercation that escalated tensions between the two teams. The player incident erupted immediately after the last whistle, sparking a brawl that included players from each team.
The fight started when Lions’ rookie defensive back Brian Branch delivered a haymaker. The punch knocked Chiefs wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster out cold. This sudden twist sent players into a frenzy on the field, with many players pouring in to join the melee. Chiefs running back Isiah Pacheco tried to jump in and pull Branch off of Smith-Schuster during the melee.
Witnesses told ESPN that Branch angrily yanked Smith-Schuster’s helmet off during the altercation, escalating the fight even more. The ugly exchange underscored the amount of tension and emotions that were running high after a hard-fought game that snapped the Detroit Lions’ four-game winning streak.
Even with the postgame pandemonium, the Chiefs’ players did manage to celebrate their hard-fought, deserved win. Even all-world quarterback Patrick Mahomes attempted to extend an olive branch by greeting Branch with a high-five near midfield after the game. Unfortunately, the second gesture got lost in the wake of their first move.
“It was a childish thing, but I’m tired of people doing stuff in between the play and refs don’t catch it. They be trying to bully me out there. I should have never did it. It was childish.” – Brian Branch
