Philip Rivers is looking to pull off an even more incredible comeback to the NFL. He’s in line to make his first career start for the Indianapolis Colts this Sunday against the Seattle Seahawks. The biggest difference is Rivers himself — he’s back on the field after retiring following the 2020 season. He’ll do it in his first game in more than 1,800 days! The 44-year-old quarterback hasn’t played in a playoff game since January of 2021. Ever since, he’s been doggedly pursuing a return to form, which has generated plenty of buzz.
The Colts just added Rivers to their practice squad. They presumably expect him to be promoted to the official 53-man roster before he can see the field. To make his return official, the team on Saturday added Rivers to their active roster.
Indy head coach Shane Steichen was very pleased with Rivers’ practice this week and it showed on the field. Be a great leader, a great teammate, go out there, operate the offense, get us in and out of the right plays. And that’s the process, and that’s the way he’s taken it, flowing with it one day at a time,” Steichen said regarding Rivers’ approach to his comeback.
The road back from his absence hasn’t been a smooth one. Rivers was able to catch up with Steichen after practice. He just wanted to check on Steichen’s arm and legs, how they were adjusting to the unexpected shocks of going back to pro ball. It’s this level of detail that reflects his passion and dedication to make sure he is ready for game day.
The Colts have tried to manage the excitement and expectations that comes with the excitement surrounding Rivers’ return with cautious optimism. His feel-good comeback story is still on track, as he’s still focusing on the day-to-day.
