Philip Rivers Returns to NFL with Colts Signing

It’s not every day that former NFL quarterback Philip Rivers makes front-page headlines. He recently signed with the Indianapolis Colts’ practice squad, completing his unlikely homecoming to the game of football. Rivers recently turned 44, but he is suddenly making waves again. He’s well on his way to becoming a 2026 Pro Football Hall of Fame semifinalist, his first year of eligibility.

Rivers is having a Canton career, and he enters with 63,440 passing yards, seventh most in league history. He’s a record-breaker himself with 421 career touchdown passes, good for sixth all-time. His choice to make a comeback has sent shockwaves through the league, delighting basketball fans and NBA analysts from coast to coast. The conditions of his return, however, only add to their fascination.

Colts’ head coach Shane Steichen opened the dialogue with Rivers. He inquired as to his odds of coming back to the squad. According to sources, Rivers was even more interested in the opportunity than he was flattered. He’d been head coach at St. Michael Catholic High School in Fairhope, Alabama, since 2021. Along the way, he’s trained, inspired and mentored countless young athletes.

Rivers had been training, working out by throwing at his former high school, staying loose and active as he was still holding out hope for a potential comeback. On Monday evening, he went all Joe Namath in his final workout for the Colts. His thorough and powerful presentation persuaded the commission to hire him. When reached on Wednesday, team sources confirmed that Rivers simply needs to get back into football shape. There’s never been a question about his arm talent.

“He needs to get in football shape, but there’s no question he can throw it,” – team source

The Colts are in the middle of a transition year and have dealt with their own issues under center this year. Meanwhile, with Rivers now in the mix, he might play as soon as this Sunday against the Seattle Seahawks. If Rivers is promoted to the active roster, he has to begin the five-year waiting period for Hall of Fame eligibility all over again. This local change could have important implications for his future opportunities.

Rivers’ family life has prospered in Alabama, where he’s able to spend more time with his ten children and new grandson. His son Gunner has emerged as a promising quarterback prospect for the Class of 2027, showcasing Rivers’ legacy in the sport through his son’s budding talent.

Their willingness to go all-in on signing Rivers speaks to their desperation to get better on the field. Steichen was adamant that the team only focused on if Rivers gave them the best chance to win.

“Of course it does. But does he give us a better chance to win is the question,” – team source

Opinions are divided on whether or not Rivers’ return is worth the risk, given his age and the fact that he just recently retired. Still others think it just shows off his competitive streak. According to sources from inside the organization, Rivers welcomes – and even relishes – that uphill battle. He’s been chomping at the bit to get on the team.

“He’s not scared of the challenge. He looks forward to it,” – team source

The Colts are still preparing for this week’s matchup. They will rely on Rivers’ experience and leadership—both on and off the field. The veteran quarterback’s presence could be pivotal in guiding the younger players and enhancing the team’s overall performance.
