Paul Peterson had a slim one-stroke lead with three holes remaining in the third round of this year’s tournament. Play was stopped because of lack of light. The 37-year-old golfer gave an impressive performance both on and off the green. He finished the round five under par, to finish at an imposing 10 under.
The round came to a stop as Peterson drained his second consecutive birdie on the long 16th hole, a par-4. He is 30 feet short of the pin now. After twelve players could not complete their rounds, the tournament was thrown into chaos with substantial delays. The first disruption was 1 hour, 36 minutes. Later, the second delay lasted 1 hour and 55 minutes, eventually forcing play to be suspended at dusk.
While Peterson held steady at the top, Chan Kim — who opened the day five strokes in front — couldn’t find a way to keep the pedal down. Alongside Sahith, David Skinns and Luke List made their cases as contenders, both at 7 under in a tie for third. Skinns finished in style, making an 8-foot moving birdie putt on the par-4 15th hole for his final birdie of the day. List’s clutch play featured a bogey-free 65 on Sunday to help him achieve the clubhouse lead.
Once the dust settled, Jackson Koivun was 68 strokes by his closest pursuers. This round left him tied for 15th at 3 under with some of his fellow competitors. The multi-millions in dollars are at stake for each major player. The tournament’s winner will receive a two-year exemption, as well as a coveted spot in next year’s PGA Championship.
The ongoing competition has captured the attention of golf fans, particularly with Peterson making his 20th career start on the PGA Tour. If his powerful recent play is any indication, he may be poised to soon reach a new milestone in his impressive golfing career.
