Peter Sirmon is set to make his NFL coaching debut as he joins the New Orleans Saints as their new linebackers coach. After seven successful years at the University of California, Sirmon is leaving his position as the defensive coordinator to embark on this new venture. The move aligns him with the staff of newly appointed Saints head coach Kellen Moore and defensive coordinator Brandon Staley.
Sirmon has established a reputation for crafting formidable defenses, particularly during his tenure at Cal. His defensive units became known for their ability to force turnovers, a critical aspect of defensive strategy. In 2023, Cal led the nation in fumbles recovered with 16 and tied for the lead in turnovers gained with 28. These statistics underscore Sirmon's prowess in creating opportunistic defenses that capitalize on opponents' mistakes.
Before joining Cal, Sirmon accrued extensive experience coaching at various collegiate programs. His coaching journey began in 2008, and over the years, he has served as a defensive coordinator at Louisville and Mississippi State. Additionally, he has contributed to the football programs at Oregon, Tennessee, Washington, and USC. Throughout his college coaching career, Sirmon has consistently demonstrated his ability to develop resilient defenses.
Sirmon's defensive acumen was further highlighted last season when Cal's defense ranked No. 14 nationally in rushing defense, allowing an average of only 109.8 yards per game. This achievement is a testament to his strategic planning and ability to optimize player performance.
As a former NFL linebacker who played with the Tennessee Titans from 2000 to 2006, Sirmon brings valuable playing experience to his new role. His transition to coaching in the NFL marks a significant milestone in his career, providing him with an opportunity to impart his knowledge and expertise to professional athletes.
