Pennsylvania Sportsbooks Face $6.5 Million Loss on Eagles’ Super Bowl Triumph

Pennsylvania sportsbooks have reported a net loss of $6.5 million following the Philadelphia Eagles' victory over the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LIX. This financial setback comes amidst a record-breaking $101.5 million in wagers placed on the game through Pennsylvania betting platforms. The Eagles' win, by a decisive 40-22 scoreline, proved costly for local sportsbooks, despite being a profitable outcome for most other states.

The volume of bets placed on the Super Bowl in Pennsylvania marked a 20.4% increase compared to the previous high set in 2023. However, the total amount bet statewide was $154.9 million, slightly down by 4.4% from last year's game. Notably, approximately 73% of wagers placed and 79% of the total money wagered at ESPN BET were on the underdog Eagles, showcasing significant local support for the team. In contrast, less than 50% of bets placed nationally at sportsbooks backed the Eagles.

The Philadelphia Eagles' victory resulted in substantial financial gains for New York's sportsbooks, with the state's gaming commission reporting a $47.4 million net win. This stands in stark contrast to Pennsylvania's outcome, where the financial loss was exacerbated by a high percentage of wagers favoring the Eagles. The state gaming control board highlighted this trend as a critical factor influencing the financial hit.

At BetMGM in Pennsylvania, several Eagles players were popular choices in the anytime touchdown-scorer market, with Saquon Barkley, Jalen Hurts, A.J. Brown, DeVonta Smith, and the Philadelphia defense/special teams all featuring prominently among the top seven most heavily bet options. This betting behavior further contributed to the challenging financial results for Pennsylvania sportsbooks.

In Kansas, ESPN BET recorded a different pattern, with only 18.7% of bets on the winner backing the Eagles. The disparity between betting patterns in Pennsylvania and other states underscores the localized enthusiasm for the Eagles and its impact on sportsbook outcomes.
