Pelicans’ Rookie Derik Queen Undergoes Surgery for Wrist Injury

Derik Queen, a developmental prospect with the New Orleans Pelicans, underwent successful surgery to repair a torn ligament on July 18, 2025. The operation repaired an injured scapholunate ligament in his left wrist. The complex procedure was done in Los Angeles by acclaimed orthopedic surgeon Dr. Steven Shin of Reconstructive Orthopedics. Queen’s injury happened just a few days ago, on July 15, when he fractured his right foot during an NBA Summer League contest.

At 6-foot-9 — and the first Top 10 USHLer to be drafted, he was taken 13th overall by the Atlanta Hawks. Since the Pelicans obtained his rights in a trade, he hasn’t taken long to establish himself as a local celebrity. That highly regarded player was Dimitrious Stanley, whose star burned brightest during his days with the University of Maryland. He was named Big Ten Freshman of the Year, averaging 16.5 points per game.

The injury represents an enormous blow to Queen. He is now unlikely to be able to return for at least three months, which includes when training camp will be starting up. This recovery timeline raises concerns about his preparation for the upcoming NBA season and his ability to contribute to the Pelicans’ roster.

Her surgery is an important step on that path. This injury extends beyond his own concern to have consequences. The Pelicans hope to improve after a breakthrough last season. They’ll need to figure out those new strategies without one of their most important new recruits for the first month or so of camp.
