The New Orleans Pelicans floor-mopped the Phoenix Suns out of town on Sunday. They cruised to an impressive 127-92 win at Rod Laver Arena. The Pelicans memorialized their winning sweep on their Aussie excursion. They crushed the competition with a dominating first-half score 74-55.
Despite all the early foul troubles, Zion Williamson only logged 15 minutes in the first half. He did not come back into the game after halftime. With all those interesting limitations, he still managed to put up 8 pts, 5 rbds, 4 apg and 2 turnovers in just that limited time on the court. Unfortunately for the Pelicans, they lost their magic without him. Other players stepped up in a big way to fill the scoring void and put on a dazzling display.
Saddiq Bey stepped up big, adding 21 points and aiding in securing the Pelicans’ lead early in the contest and keeping it for the remainder of the game. Jordan Poole and Jeremiah Fears both left their marks on the program. Their individual brilliance linked handsomely with the greater narrative of the team’s success.
Jordan Hunter poured in 17 points to help the team’s cause. Nathan Sobey and Akech Aliir were highly impactful, with both players scoring 16 points apiece. It was this unique and collective effort from these players that made sure the Pelicans continued their rampant play on the court.
The game didn’t come without difficulties. Jose Alvarado limped off the court in the third quarter. He would not re-enter for the remainder of the game. His exit from the game was alarming, though his replacement and the offensive line as a whole had been playing pretty well with him out.
A highlight of the game came when Karlo Matkovic received an impressive alley-oop from Jordan Poole from half-court, electrifying the crowd and exemplifying the Pelicans’ flair and teamwork.
