Hired in the offseason, Troy Weaver is the New Orleans’ new general manager. His departure from those last duties as consultant to the Washington Wizards will certainly be felt. This appointment represents the crowning achievement in Weaver’s career, tied to three different franchises in the NBA.
Weaver started his management career in the NBA working with the Utah Jazz. During the 2007-08 campaign, he shined in his role as director of player personnel. During five of his 13 seasons with the Jazz, he served as their head scout. Throughout that period he was instrumental in evaluating talent and molding their acquisition strategies. His knowledge provided him new opportunities and unimaginable doors opened for him. He had a lengthy stay with the Oklahoma City Thunder, where he assumed the titles of vice president and assistant GM beginning in 2008. Prior to the 2017-18 season, Weaver was promoted to vice president of basketball operations for the Thunder.
On June 18, 2020, Weaver was hired as the general manager for the Detroit Pistons. It was under his leadership of the team that the city endured the most serious challenges. Even with the strife and turmoil during his tenure in Detroit, Weaver undeniably left a favorable mark on the franchise’s future through a few important picks. Under his leadership, the Pistons have drafted Cade Cunningham and Jaden Ivey. Both players have proven to be great building blocks as the team’s future stars. Beyond Williams, Ausar Thompson and Luke Garza were products of Weaver’s drafting strategy. Add in the Pistons lucking out in this year’s NBA Draft Lottery. For the three previous years, they had drawn the No. 5 pick but were never able to draw higher picks.
In his new role in New Orleans, Weaver will have a direct line to Joe Dumars. Especially now with Dumars just getting plucked to be the Pelicans’ new head of basketball ops.
