Paul Prichard is currently the interim Head Coach of Hampshire women’s cricket team. He will be at the helm through at least the conclusion of the 2025 season. This announcement comes on the heels of Charlotte Edwards’ departure, who left the role to take over as head coach for England’s women’s team, succeeding Jon Lewis.
Prichard’s long experience in cricket, both as a player and a commentator, makes him ideal for the role. He signed on as a member of the coaching staff at Utilita Bowl in 2022. Since then he has worked as the batting coach for Southern Vipers. His playing career, with Essex from 1982 to 1991, took a similar trajectory. During his first-class playing career, Prichard played in over 300 first-class matches, scoring more than 16,000 runs. On top of that, he scored almost 7,500 runs in 299 List A matches, underlining his dominance with the bat.
Now at 60, Prichard is an experienced hand who has a good deal of leadership and depth to offer Hampshire’s young women’s team. In the proposed women’s domestic season restructuring plan for 2025, the team would continue to play under the Hampshire name. Hampshire is one of eight professional Tier 1 teams that will be hosting matches this season.
In accepting this new appointment, Prichard shared his excitement to build on the legacy that Edwards put in place. He talked a lot about retaining the spirit and ethos that Edwards built in her time at the choir.
“Having worked alongside Charlotte Edwards for the past four years, and knowing the core values, culture and the cricketing ethos of the club that she put in place, it will be a privilege to continue to build on those,” – Paul Prichard
A second key point Prichard made was his enthusiasm to join such a talented roster. Hampshire’s squad mix of youth and experience offers an intriguing prospect. They’re looking to get the best out of it as they prepare to deploy their fleets for the coming season.
“I very much look forward to continuing my work with a talented squad of players with a good blend of youth and experience alongside an excellent support staff,” – Paul Prichard
As the interim head coach, Prichard is tasked with steering the team through a pivotal time in women’s cricket in England. He comes with the deep-rooted experience, and he is committed to nurturing talent. His immediate goal is to lead Hampshire to victory in the seasons that lie ahead.
