According to multiple reports, and confirmed by Bentley’s agent, the New England Patriots plan to release veteran starting linebacker. This announcement catches many by surprise due to Bentley’s on-field contributions. The 28-year-old linebacker has developed into a linchpin of the Patriots’ defense. He’s recorded at least 100 tackles in each of the last three seasons. Bentley, a Purdue product and former 5th-round selection in 2018, spent the last seven seasons with New England. Now, he’s preparing for his eighth season with the club.
Bentley was scheduled to make a non-guaranteed base salary of $4.35 million this year. In addition, he’d have anticipated per game roster bonuses of $60,000 as well as a workout bonus of $130,000. The Patriots’ decision to cut ties with the linebacker, one of the highest-paid Patriots players, is notable. Now, they’re intent on remaking their roster in their own image. Purdue’s Bentley, revered for his leadership abilities, became the first three-time captain in Boilermaker history. During his four years with the Patriots, he earned three captaincies. When you consider that, this achievement is a tremendous accomplishment spearheaded by strong leadership on and off the field.
Over the last few seasons, Bentley has been a steadfast figure on the Patriots’ defense. He logged a career-high 122 tackles in 2022 and regularly passed the 100-tackle plateau in the years following. Bentley experienced a major disappointment a season ago when he ruptured his left pectoral muscle in Week 2. Fortunately, he’s now been fully cleared to return to action!
Ahead of his release, Bentley hopped on the social media platform X to share a parting message. His departure signals the continued end of an era for the Patriots’ defense. Since joining the team, he has been an MVP-caliber, driving force — anchoring their lineup.
