Other teams Terrell Williams, the defensive coordinator for the New England Patriots, has been conspicuously absent from that team’s rookie minicamp. He is still recovering from a recent health scare. He was traveling to his hometown of Detroit for spring break in late March when the encounter occurred. To that end, he chose to reclaim his role off the field as he started his first season with the Patriots.
Williams wants to keep the details of his alarming health scare under wraps for now. The Worst-Case Scenario He’s called it a “wake-up call,” and he hopes that it will serve as motivation for other municipalities facing the same crisis. We are deeply saddened that due to COVID precautions, medical professionals have advised him to stay home as he continues to heal.
So here’s what I’d like to emphasize, Williams continued. While I’m out of the building, my practice makes me uniquely in touch with the rest of the team. He has been working remotely and told us he is very hopeful about being able to return soon. I’ll keep y’all updated and again, love and prayers to everybody,” he said.
Besides Scarnecchia, head coach Mike Vrabel has a very close bond to Williams that dates back to their time together on the Tennessee Titans coaching staff since 2018. He personally visits Williams every morning, keeping him plugged into the campus community. While Williams has been out, Zak Kuhr has taken over his duties.
Zak is deeply knowledgeable about our history. He gets all of my frustrations with this system and our development with Terrell,” Vrabel said, pointing out Kuhr’s exceptional skill and knowledge with respect to the team’s overall approach.
Even from a distance, Williams is still confident in Kuhr’s ability to carry the load as the leader of the defense. He knows that the defense couldn’t be in better hands than those of Zak Kuhr,” he said. He underscored his confidence in Kuhr’s expertise and thorough knowledge of their system. Kuhr had served on Vrabel’s staff from 2020 to 2023. He has impressive familiarity with the defensive schemes that Williams was running through that period.
Williams went on to present his best practices for controlling the stress levels that come with one of the most high-pressure occupations—football. “We all have different stress levels. We all know football is a profession that comes with uniquely high levels of stress. Just eating right. Working out. If you need to be on some medication, get on it,” he told me. He went on to admonish gamers that “we are all under this misconception that we’re invincible,” driving home the need for health consciousness.
Though Williams is still in recovery, he can’t wait to get back to Foxborough and meet his new team face-to-face. His commitment to his role as defensive coordinator is evident.
