Patrick Reed has shot from 62nd to 49th in the world golf rankings. This accomplishment ensures his invitation to the 2024 PGA Championship, scheduled for May 15-18 at Quail Hollow. This ranking provides Reed a critical opportunity to score additional points. All those points are critical for him as he looks to lock down a place in next year’s high-stakes major tournaments.
The PGA Championship would be an important turning point for Reed. It occurs only one week before the exemption deadline for the U.S. Open, providing one last opportunity for the top 60 players in the world to qualify. Reed’s recent performances have hinted at his upside for growth. He ended up 9-under 279 on the week, just two shots shy of qualifying for the playoff. He’s racked up four top-10s in just five non-LIV Golf events this year. This performance underscores his deeply impressive competitive form.
Reed’s experience in the LIV Golf series has not contributed to his world ranking, as these events do not offer ranking points. He’s preparing for upcoming competition in front of his LIV Golf teammates in Mexico City and South Korea. These competitions will provide him important mid-level shots to hone his skills in advance of the PGA Championship.
Following a Thursday round where he opened with a score of 71, Reed reflected on his struggles with putting, stating, “The putter killed me, killed me this week.” He referred to his putting performance as “piss poor” and “pretty straightforward.” That shows the one major chink in his armor that he needs to shore up heading into the PGA Championship.
The reason for Reed’s lofty ranking is the divisor in the formula for ranking points being set at a minimum of 40. This internal factor is the reason why he’s done so poorly so far. If he has a big week at Quail Hollow, his excellent play at the last three tournaments would do plenty to boost his case.
Recess Reed has gained exemption into The Open Championship already. His scintillating second-place finish in the International Series Macau on the Asian Tour gives him even more chances to soar this season. The PGA Championship coming quickly thereafter. As everyone looks on Reed, he’ll be doing all he can to position himself among the game’s brightest stars.
