Patrick Reed is in the midst of a very difficult road to make the U.S. Ryder Cup team. That equity is coming into sharp focus with the upcoming U.S. Open at New York’s Bethpage Black this September. Reed, who’s 7-3-2 overall in his previous Ryder Cup appearances in 2016, 2018 and 2021, is looking to improve his points position.
At 34 years old, Reed just had arguably the biggest title victory of his career, most recently winning at LIV Golf Dallas just last month. After such a strong debut this success has reestablished his confidence as he heads into the next two events that will help determine his selection. As of this writing, he is currently No. 36 in the U.S. Ryder Cup points standings. As for LIV golfers, only performances in major tournaments count towards these rankings.
We can tell you that Reed is hellbent on making a big impact over the next few weeks. Most importantly, he needs to improve his odds of being picked by U.S. captain Keegan Bradley. He emphasized the need for strong performance in future competitive opportunities, saying.
“Really the next couple weeks I have to play some solid golf, go out and contend on Sundays, have a chance to win golf tournaments, and if I do that, then hopefully Keegan picks me.”
For this elite group of American golfers, their next high-pressure test has traditionally been The Open Championship. He’s scored his best finish there of 10th, achieved in 2019. This year, the championship will be held at Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland, beginning next Thursday. Following this event, Reed will get right back to business on the LIV Golf Andalucia course. For that, he’ll face off at the historic Real Club Valderrama in Sotogrande, Spain.
Reed is fourth in the individual season standings as a member of the 4Aces GC. This remarkable status further underscores the impact he could have on a team if drafted. His magnificent record in previous Ryder Cups only serves to add to his status as a leading contender to make this year’s team.
