Pat Riley and Kansas City Chiefs Reach Landmark Agreement on “Three-Peat” Trademark

Pat Riley
, the Miami Heat president, has reached an agreement with the Kansas City Chiefs to use the trademarked phrase “Three-Peat” if the Chiefs secure a victory in the upcoming Super Bowl. Riley initially filed for the “Three-Peat” trademark at the start of the 1988-89 NBA season, shortly after his Los Angeles Lakers clinched their second consecutive title. This deal, though not formally signed, allows the Chiefs to utilize the phrase without concerns of trademark infringement.

Riley's ownership of several trademarks related to "Three-Peat" has been a long-standing part of his legacy. The term gained prominence during the Lakers' era under Riley, who led them to three straight titles in the 1980s. This feat was mirrored by other sports dynasties, such as the Chicago Bulls in the 1990s and the post-Riley Lakers in the 2000s, as well as the New York Yankees' consecutive World Series victories from 1998 to 2000.

The Chiefs are now poised to make history as they attempt to become the first NFL team to win three consecutive Super Bowls. Their showdown against the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday night in New Orleans sets the stage for a potential historic moment in sports.

Although the agreement is specifically between Riley and the Chiefs and not with the NFL, it signifies a notable collaboration. The Chiefs, if victorious, will have the freedom to celebrate their achievement with the iconic phrase "Three-Peat." This arrangement further highlights Riley's unique position in sports marketing and branding.

Riley has expressed his commitment to philanthropy by donating much of his earnings from the trademark to the Pat Riley Family Foundation. Should the Chiefs triumph in New Orleans, he plans to continue this tradition by contributing funds generated from this agreement to his charitable foundation.
