Lucas Paquetá, the Brazilian internacional footballer, is currently under an investigation for spot-fixing allegations. Once his case is over – and he is now adamant that once his case is over he will take the FA to court. The commission cleared him of the betting charges, stating that they were not proven, yet Paqueta’s legal team is now contemplating potential proceedings in light of the FA’s handling of the investigation.
Paqueta had surely never seen such pressure regarding everything he’d do. Specifically, he attempted to earn cards in four separate Premier League matches between November 2022 and August 2023. During the investigation, he insisted that his ties to five grave circumstances of the case had been minimal. He argued that he was not in day-to-day contact with them and almost never talked to them about football-related issues.
The commission’s findings indicated that there was “nothing in Lucas Paqueta’s on-field conduct” that supported the FA’s allegations of deliberate misconduct. In summation, they found that Paqueta’s behavior did not fit the profile of spot-fixing and was in fact better explained by other variables.
“Rather, in the commission’s view, it is in many respects inconsistent with a spot-fix, but consistent with alternative explanations.” – commission
While he is acquitted on the betting charges, Paqueta was found at fault for not cooperating with the original FA investigation and was fined. His defence team, headed by Alastair Campbell, is now studying the written reasons for the acquittal. They’re considering suing the FA, claiming it pursued his case wrongly.
Remarkably, former West Ham manager David Moyes and ex-Premier League referee Mark Clattenburg both came to Paqueta’s defence. They submitted powerful evidence that paints a picture of his achievements and character. Moyes remarked on the yellow card incidents in question, asserting:
“I have re-watched the yellow card incidents closely and, based on my own footballing experience and knowledge of (Paqueta), consider them to be entirely within the normal range of actions for this player.” – David Moyes
Campbell underlined Paqueta’s character, describing him as a “profoundly religious individual devoted to his family.” He noted that the evidence presented during the investigation showcased Paqueta’s lack of interest in gambling:
“Lucas is a deeply religious man, absolutely dedicated to his wife and young children. The evidence not only showed he has no interest in gambling whatsoever but confirmed that his integrity as both a player and a person is beyond doubt.” – Alastair Campbell
The FA has now officially ruled out appealing the commission’s decision. Sanctions are on the way over two accusations against Paqueta. These charges relate to his reported lack of collaboration with the FA investigation and will be heard at a later date.
Throughout the investigation, we were able to retrieve more than 300 deleted texts from Paqueta’s phones. Significantly, none of these communications had anything to do with spot-fixing. Her agency to disclose such incriminating evidence has galvanized Paqueta’s resolve to exonerate herself. He is further said to be contemplating suing the FA.
During this tough moment, Lucas Paqueta’s priorities are on adjusting to new circumstances, continuing to provide for his family while reviving his career. Whether the FA gets sued or not, fans and analysts alike will be keen to observe the legal process. Together, these events beg the question, is there bias influencing investigations in professional sports specifically the NFL.
