The Carolina Panthers have released veteran cornerback Dane Jackson, a move that will clear $3.35 million in salary cap space. This decision comes as the team seeks to enhance its financial flexibility for future roster moves. Prior to releasing Jackson, the Panthers had approximately $30 million available in cap space.
Dane Jackson, originally a seventh-round pick by the Buffalo Bills in 2020, joined the Panthers after signing a two-year, $8.5 million contract. His tenure with the team was marred by a hamstring injury that sidelined him for the first six games of the current season. Once he returned, Jackson primarily filled the role of a nickelback. Despite starting all 17 games for the Panthers, Jackson struggled defensively, allowing a 123.6 passer rating and a 75.9 completion percentage when targeted.
The release of Jackson opens up opportunities for the Panthers to focus on developing younger talent, such as Chau Smith-Wade. Additionally, the move provides the team with more financial leeway to extend Jaycee Horn, who is considered a priority by General Manager Dan Morgan. Horn's stellar performance earned him a Pro Bowl selection in 2024, and he played alongside Jackson during the season.
The Panthers now have increased flexibility to re-sign cornerback Michael Jackson, who started all 17 games and is a different player from Dane Jackson. This strategic decision reflects the Panthers' commitment to strengthening their roster while maintaining financial stability.
