Bryce Young, the still-promising young quarterback of the Carolina Panthers, looked flashy and creative in his fourth NFL preseason game of 2025. New offensive coordinator Dave Canales has been instrumental in Young’s efforts to raise the team’s physicality. They want it more than anything after a 5-12 disaster of last season. Well, the Panthers certainly want to be known as a meaner, nastier group on the field — starting this very season.
At practice, Young and running back Chuba Hubbard expressed the frustration of their team’s pre-snap penalties. These infractions were painfully evident after this past week’s defeat to the Cleveland Browns and the week before to the Houston Texans. Both players were made to run a gasser, a brutal conditioning test. This challenge served to harden accountability and discipline within the team.
Canales emphasized the importance of physicality in his approach to coaching, stating, “Every week it’s super physical in this league.” His comments illustrate the Panthers’ overall lack of urgency and intensity. They need to, as they build themselves towards the daunting competition that will await them in the next NFL campaign.
In passionate debate over Young’s play, former NFL quarterback Dan Orlovsky told “Get Up” hosts what he saw. They discussed whether he is too old to keep up his massive production all while blasting the University of Michigan for him. Young’s ability to lead the team effectively against formidable opponents will be crucial as the Panthers seek to improve their standing in the league.
Young didn’t take any personal shrapnel in the form of penalties, but his team’s alarming rate of pre-snap penalties during his season was a red flag. Canales was proud that players have been holding each other accountable on these kinds of mistakes, which he’s been trying to harp on. “They had been talking to each other and holding each other accountable to the pre-snap stuff I’ve been harping on,” Canales mentioned.
Even with the few hiccups, Canales was happy with how Young fared on the first day of practice. “Good teachable moment. A fantastic day of work,” he stated, highlighting the progress being made as the team prepares for the upcoming season.
