Pakistan has inexplicably found itself a fighting chance against its long-standing rivals, India, in the Asia Cup currently being contested amongst South Asia’s cricketing powers. After a closely contested game, Pakistan finished with a score of 127 runs for the loss of 9 wickets in their 20 overs. This left India needing to chase down 128 runs to secure the victory. Even with this lowly tally, India is still the prohibitive favorite to run down the runs and win the match.
The game was held in a sold out venue—a stadium filled with excited fans from both countries, rumbling as they supported their teams. Pakistan’s batting lineup struggled against India’s bowlers. Contributions from players like Sahibzada Farhan and Shaheen Afridi provided some hope for the team. Farhan was the top scorer with the bat, scoring a quickfire 40 off just 44 balls. He eventually succumbed to fellow left-armer Kuldeep Yadav, who was India’s pick of the bowlers. Afridi’s quickfire 33 runs off just 16 balls at the end of the innings helped Pakistan reach a total that could create pressure on their opponents.
As India resumed their chase, Abhishek Sharma and Shubman Gill made up a blistering start. Sharma made a big impression from the get-go. He cartwheeled back to the first ball of the innings, converting it almost immediately into a full toss and thumping it down the ground for four runs. Gill didn’t take long either, getting his own boundary with a flourish. He moved down the wicket and carved the ball back over the bowler’s head for another four.
After the first over India were 12 runs for none down. They extended their lead to 14 runs by the end of 1.5 overs, showcasing their intent to chase Pakistan’s target aggressively. As the innings wore on, the ever-zealous Sharma and Gill began to look uncomfortable against the fiery Pakistani pace attack. Gill in particular had a nervous time facing the in-form Mohammad Haris, who probed his technique for much of the first spell.
Kuldeep Yadav’s exceptional bowling performance saw him take crucial wickets and help restrict Pakistan’s scoring. Yadav’s ability to apply pressure on the opposition was evident, further complicating Pakistan’s batting strategy.
Though they definitely missed their chance with the bat, Pakistan did help strengthen their innings with some significant partnerships and attacking batting at the death. Thanks to Shaheen Afridi’s late tirade, Pakistan set up an arguable total. It was unclear if that’d be sufficient to test India’s strong batting lineup.
